Oh, sure, the free X.org NV driver works just fine for 2D graphics...

Which isn't quite what you are asking, I suspect.  You want to know if
the NVIDIA *binary* drivers work well with Ubuntu and X.org for 3D
acceleration, correct?


That works fine too, and the binary drivers are reasonably accessible
out of the box and as a packaged part of the distribution.
