Debian and it's sub-distros such as Ubuntu etc use runlevel 2 for
everything including X.
To install the nvidia drivers (Debian instructions but should work for
Ubuntu):
apt-get install modules-assistant
m-a prepare
m-a a-i nvidia
apt-get install nvidia-glx
edit your xorg.conf changing the driver to nvidia.
