I don't have the rest of the answer, but to possibly alleviate some 
frustration - I suspsect the browser does not in fact identify the modem - it 
merely reports the string the device has embedded in it.

So this is not inconsistent with the rest of the system's behavior in claiming 
it doesn't know what it is - it really doesn't, it's just parroting a string.
