From rom my understanding, it was due to 2 different reasons.

1) Many developers were getting annoyed at the slow rate of development
of Xfree86.

2) They changed the license so that any product containing Xfree86 had
to list all the developers on the box.


I think the above is correct, please correct me otherwise. :-)

Xorg is where all the new features are going. Most of the distros now
use Xorg, and it is generally better.

Also, recently the Xorg team managed to modularise the Xorg code, so you
no longer have to compile a mammoth tarball. (if you like compiling from
source).

Basically, Xorg is the way to go. :-)
