Personally I don't object to such advertising, either. However, the person who
donates the service (and owns) this list HAS specified his rules for the use of
this service. Rather than try to sort out what is and is not considered
acceptable advertising, the rule is NO ADVERTISING. PERIOD. If in doubt, ask.
This does beg the question of what is the difference/distinction between
notification/promotion/information/advertising. Everyone will have their own
opinion, which (very obviously) will vary. I don't see it having anything to do
with commercial gain. I "advertised" the Installfest, but certainly didn't
gain- I'm still out of pocket :-)
But it's not my list, I'm just one of the people who makes use of it. I don't
make the rules, it's not even WellyLUG's list, so Wellylug doesn't make the
rules. Wellylug members (with one exception :-) just use it (& at times abuse
it).
I'm disappointed that so many luggites seem unable to respect the wishes of the
person who owns & provides this service. Especially when we have agreed to use
another donated service from another member to cater for any members who desire
to post advertisements.
To me it is about simple courtesy and giving the simple respect everyone should
be due. So I agree with Andrej's mildly perjorative comments on the manners of
those refusing to abide by the rule, although I would suggest pigs are normally
clean & intelligent animals, so the comparison was not really fair :-)
I am impressed with Ewen's tolerance, I know I'm not so patient & if I provided
this service & my requirements were so widely ignored, abjured & derided, I'd
have stopped bothering to provide it to a group with such ungrateful yobbos
years ago :-)
