Well, apt and friends will warn you if you are trying to remove
something that is absolutely essential.

Otherwise you can see what else it proposes to remove as a result.  If
that includes too many things, or things that you want, then decline
that proposal.

It certainly isn't an ideal situation though.

That isn't a supported configuration with Ubuntu, and might well cause
problems.  Using the built-in support for running administrative tools
as root, including the file browser, is a better choice.

No.  One of the shortcomings of this hidden folders model as far as I am
concerned.  Like the people who feel that icons should be inextricably
bound to executables it takes no account that some users may have
different tastes or needs.

No notion, sorry.  If you followed the upgrade instructions on the
KUbuntu website, including their small list of packages to ensure were
installed, then I suggest reporting this as a bug.

There seems to be a strong recommendation on the Ubuntu development
lists for this model, especially in situations where users have
configured unsupported options on their system.

This disappoints me somewhat, but what can you do?
