I'm not familiar much with Trademe (since I live in the US), but if
you get a used IBM Thinkpad, you really can't go wrong.  I've had
linux distros from older Gentoo to Debian (sarge on up) to FC2/3/4, to
(K)Ubuntu on my thinkpads (I've owned 4 of them) and they've all run
pretty flawlessly.  I had display problems in the beginning with my
old Thinkpad 365X, but the 560X, A22m, and X31 are all running linux
pretty well.  You'll find that most Thinkpads are extremely well
supported.
