Well, there you go.

Eight months between releases, and three and a half years of support. ;)

Dapper is the "Long Term Support" release, 6.06, and is designed to last
for five years.  5.10 was the prior release.

In practical terms there isn't a huge degree of difference, mostly
software version updated, and it really will not hurt that much to be
running either for the moment.

Absolutely.  I agree completely:

This is the right thing to do.  Since I don't use FireFox, and since I
already had the JDK installed, I can't reproduce the problem.

If you report it then, probably, Ubuntu can take action to *make* it
work that way.  Without you telling them it needs to be done[1] they may
not actually know!

[1]  ...and those hundreds of people having the same problem probably
     have not reported it either, just complained and hoped someone else
     takes on that responsibility -- not that it is more than a few
     minutes work.
