By way of background, I noticed some time ago that my largely unused
20Gb WinXP partition on a separate HD would not boot. A ClamAV scan showed it was
infected with Magistr.a, Magistr.b, and (I can't find my notes) NetSky viri.
ClamAV helped me delete infected files, but no boot. WinXP Recovery
Console & fixboot & fixmbr - no boot. It was not being recognised as a
FAT fs. Playing with 'testdisk' fixed that, installing MBR & GRUB to MBR on /dev/hda1.
GRUB now boots using colour or GUI from fd0, but only in CLI from MBR.
WinXP still does not boot, when I wrote the previous email only giving
me the Capital C with a Cedilla (an inverted question mark) as an error
msg.
Google interpretes it either as part of the Turkish alphabet (eg.
Ceyhan), or part of the syntax of the 'C' computer language.
I have reinstalled it a few times and now get the error msg
'C(with Cedilla)Loading Stage 2' before it fails to load WinXP and
reverts to GRUB GUI or CLI console.
I reproduce the install below. I am not sure what 'p' means in the
final msg. I should say that I've long been inclined to reformat
and install recent UBUNTU over it but having got this far I'd like to
get it up. It contains downloaded literature, and allows me to use the
FRITZ 8 chess program - requiring M$DOS.
-----------------------------------------
grub> root (hd0,0)
Filesystem type is fat, partition type 0xc
grub> setup (hd0)
Checking if "/boot/grub/stage1" exists ... yes
Checking if "/boot/grub/stage2" exists ... yes
Checking if "/boot/grub/fat_stage1_5" exists ... no
Running "install /boot/grub/stage1 (hd0) /boot/grub/stage2 p
/boot/grub/menu.lst" ... succeeded.
Done
gub> quit
------------------------------------------
I'd be grateful for any constructive advice.
