Jethro, I noticed that Xubuntu (~600MB) was running slowly on
the old Dell laptop at the InstallFest, with fuzzy resolution. A
better alternative might be Aquamorph
<http://aquariusoft.org/page/linux/> (~300MB), also Gtk based, which 
gives much the same functionality. It is a derivative of the Morphix
Project by Alex Landengraaf
<http://www.morphix.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=78&Itemid=59>
who produced some of the first modular Debian based live CD's. He has
since been involved with ubuntu, and probably xubuntu, but his original
distro - updated 9/9/2006 - is a lot lighter on resources.
 

I don't know if anyone has the owners contact details, but he might be
following this list.
