That depends on what you mean by 'share files'. I have a file server
here that shares to a WinXP machine via SMB with no problems, it even
appears in the Network Neighbourhood, all this is accomplished with
Samba. From Linux machines I tend to need to type in the IP address,
but that's getting better with newer Linux distros and better file
manager/samba distribution.

Personally I find SMB dog slow, if you want speed go with NFS or AFP,
they're far faster in my experience.
