Yes and no: you can install previous versions of a package in Ubuntu by
way of two paths.  There isn't a generic "undo the last upgrade"
operation though.

'dpkg -i example.deb' will install whatever version you feed it,
including a lower version than is installed already.  This should
correctly downgrade, and most packages "just work" in this regard.


Alternately you can specify an exact version (or distribution) to
install with apt-get or anything derived, as follows:

    apt-get install example=2.45
    apt-get install example/breezy


However, the best bet is to upgrade to the latest version.  If there is
a serious bug in the software it has likely been reported and fixed in
the meanwhile, or at least documented in the BTS.

Also, don't forget to report this to Launchpad so that anyone else
suffering it can have it resolved.


Oh, and if you post the error messages or whatever that Thunderbird
emits you might find someone can help solve the problem for you. :)
