Hi everyone,

First of all, I'm really grateful for all of the kind welcome mail, etc.
Thank you! I'm pleased to meet you all. In comparison to our Tokyo Linux
Users Group, it seems like everybody is much more relaxed and friendly-
the Tokyo list is sometimes overwhelmingly pedantic and nit-picky about
netiquette (if you top-post they throw you to the dogs). Once I
accidentally used the word "hacker" when I meant "cracker" and was
almost excommunicated... so it's nice to not have to worry too much
about insignificant and oftentimes arbitrary protocols.

We are flying in to Auckland on either the 18th or 25th of November.

down to Wellington. I'll send the exact dates when they are finalized.
Although I won't be down in time to attend the meeting, maybe if anyone
is free we can hook up for a drink and talk geek.

Incidentally, I've heard broadband costs in Wellington are around 125$
monthly- is this correct? The server I'm sending this mail from
(slackisland) is currently in my kitchen and if possible I'd like to
migrate it as well to NZ, but I'm wondering about broadband and ISP
costs. Do ISPs there allow leasing of a single dedicated IP and let you
set the hostname for those reverse DNS resolution issues? What are you
all doing for your servers? If it's too expensive then I'll resort to
renting a server from some other provider, but the server that I'm
running now is really awesome and I'd like to keep it: It's a homemade
dual core AMD64 with software Raid5 on 4 SATA drives, and check this
out, it is liquid cooled with one of these:

Geek out!

Anyway thanks again for your kindness and advice.

Cheers,

You can get cable (as opposed to ADSL) in Wellington and Christchurch so
that gets you a static IP as a matter of course.
ADSL is provided by Telecom (with other ISPs sub leasing, so to speak) and
that gets you a dynamic IP

The cable service is provided by TelstraClear. This page gives their current
terms
