Ubuntu 6.06 is a very good base, but it looks like it is having
problems dealing with your precise hardware. It's probable that it can
be installed by someone experienced, but at long range it's likely to
be very frustrating for you.
IIRC, there is a boot option to force the system to use "vesa" mode,
which is more likely to work; but I don't know if that is
substantially different from the Safe Mode you've already tried.
Hence the suggestion to use a newer version of Linux, which might be
more robust in this regard. The Ubuntu 7.04 Beta would be worth
trying; however the full release version is going to be coming out
soon, and it would probably be better to save your download bandwidth
until that's available.
Alternatively, one of the other Linux versions (Fedora Core?) could
also be worth trying. Anyone got any specific recommendations?

Even XP is supposed to be significantly more stable than that. I'd say
that either your machine has been infested with malware, or your
hardware is somehow broken.
I'd recommend installing ClamWin for anti-virus, AdAware and SpyBot
for malware, and running them all in the fullest mode for an in-depth
scan of your system, and removal of the malware that is probably in
there.
This should increase the reliability of your system enough that you
can wait a few weeks for the release of Ubuntu 7.04 :-)
