I've never had a problem with SATA before - what sort of dodgy hardware
were you using? :-)

HOWEVER: Trying to use the motherboards "hardware" RAID often won't
work, because vendors cheat and actually provide you with "host raid",
which replaces some of the hardware with software in the driver (think
winmodems).

But software raid is great, so it makes more sense just to use that.
