[wellylug] capturing audio from DVD

I want to capture about 15 seconds of audio from a DVD. What I'd like
to be able to do is play the DVD, then press some kind of 'record'
button, and have the audio captured from that point on until I press
'stop'. I don't want to rip the entire DVD, I just need 15 seconds or
so.
I've had a very brief look at dvdrip and other software, but it all
seems either overly complex for what I want, or oriented to ripping the
whole DVD. I'll persevere with that if there are no easy options, but
it occurs to me that there might be something I'm overlooking.
Someone suggested audacity, which seems like a good idea, being able to
record whatever the soundcard is outputting, but it only seems to want
to access /dev/dsp, which is in use when I'm playing a DVD of course.
I'm using Ubuntu Edgy on an oldish IBM thinkpad if that's of any use.
