If you are brand new, then I would suggest Mandriva 2007.1 Free. Its simple,
easy to use. Great for a beginner but powerful enough for everything I've
had to do (host a private web and ftp server, host games) and the new update
notification is very handy (although I use Powerpack so you may not get that
and some other things on the Free version). But overall, its a very good OS
to start with!
