[wellylug] Mostly OT: Stop Motion Video

I know there's a couple of people on this list who are into video 
editing so I thought would ask here.

After watching a documentary my kids are wanting to try create some stop 
motion video.

I've been intending to purchase a video camera this year anyway so now 
before I do so I wanted to get some information on both cameras and 
video editing software (which preferably runs on Linux).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I haven't done anything like 
this in 20 years.
