I did pull together some information about 4 years ago on the subject
[video software], mostly through Googling. Still up at <http://
MovieFest.org.nz/03/resources#linux> - probably a few broken links by
now.

The suite that caught my eye the most back then was Cinelerra - still
at <http://heroinewarrior.com/cinelerra.php3> - but also a cvs
branch: <http://cvs.cinelerra.org/> I did a few projects on it back
then - and was impressed with ease of use. I'd used Final Cut (mac)
and it seemed to have similar functionality. Haven't touched it for a
while though.

As for hardware - any firewire based camera can work with the likes
of dvgrab to get DV off the camera, which then can be manipulated to
your hearts desire. If you are just doing stop motion - then check
out StopMotion: <http://stopmotion.bjoernen.com/>

Would love to see what the kids come up with!
