Sounds interesting.
Since writing my email I've been playing around with GPSMan, Viking,
pygarmin and a few others. I think the most promising for me is
pygarmin as it is a python module hence available for use in my own
scripts/programs. GPSMan doesn't look much initially but actually
seems pretty good once you learn a bit more about it - similar to
Garmin's MapSource in some respects. Viking was difficult to use (and
not really what I need either). gpsbabel looks very useful too.
Looks like there's a fair bit of support for GPS-related activities in
Linux, which is great.
