I use RedHat at work and Debian/Ubuntu at home. Debian and Ubuntu are so
much easier to use, it isn't funny. But you have to use what the
enterprise wants. Up2date and Yum are complicated and clumsy as compared
to apt-get, though up2date/yum are moving in the right direction and are
getting more and more like apt-get every day. However you still
frequently end up in 'dependency hell'.

Install a recent RedHat and you might still get around 200 packages try
to update and unless you purchase Proxy server (big bucks, separate
server required and it's still only RedHat with Squid and Apache), each
and every RedHat system phones home (RedHat in the US) for updates. On
Debian slap in 'proxy server' and that fixes that problem. Also there
are local Debian mirrors where ever in the world you are.

KDE is HORRIBLE! I hate its "FisherPrice" look, the glaring colours, and
the gigantic clunky icons. KDE users maintain that you can chanage all
that but why bother when you can use Gnome out of the box, and get a
pleasant intuitive experience so far from the unpleasant garish
experience that KDE provides?

File manager? I usually use the command line.

Cheers,

Cliff
