I've upgraded my Ubuntu twice now with few real problems. Others have 
had trouble, I know.

I didn't even know that you could upgrade Slack eg from 9 to 10. I 
thought that it *had* to be a fresh install.

Slack still uses the 2.4 series kernel and lilo and there's no excuse 
for that. They are both sooooo old, and while they still work, that's 
about all that can be said for them.
