It is not too difficult.  The most important things are that you have
a backup of all your data before you start and that you have checked
the backup is sound.

GNU Parted is a nice bit of software to actually do the resizing.  It
should be part of your Ubuntu install, or available in the standard
repositories.  Alternatively, you can boot off a CD (like
http://www.sysresccd.org/) which has the tool; this has the advantage
that your existing partition is not mounted to begin with.

Sysresccd has a graphical front-end for Parted called gparted.

I have never encountered a limitation on the brand of RAM supported,
and 4GB should not pose any problem.  If there is a limitation, it is
more likely to be the capacity of the laptop motherboard.
