VLC certainly seems to work more reliably, but I guess it's up to each user
to decide if they want proprietary format support bundled with the player...
having totem as the default allows each user the choice. Personally I use
VLC, as I have plenty of media that I've received from various sources in
various non-free formats and I also still use multiple OS's, so I like being
able to use the same player easily cross-platform.
