[wellylug] Asus eeebox with Linux

Hi Tony.

Thanks for that.... ASUS NZ & TechPAc/Ingram Micro only list a WinXPH version.

I'm looking at a small system to build a Linux/FOSS navigational system/chartplotter for my boat. The eeepc isn't as waterproof as I'd like, but meets most other requirements. The box with a waterproof kb/mouse screen would be more robust.

I believe OpenSuse 11.1 fully supports the eee out of the box... & Opensuse has the best support & ease of use of any distro I know of for the GIS/GPS/mapping tools I need to use (although I could possibly get by with an Ubuntu based eee distro). The eee isn't the best platform for extensive compiles.... but that is still possible.... if I wait long enough for it to finish. Adding the compiler support is extra overhead though :-)

I do like PCLOS, & have done for some years, but the somewhat moribund state of eeePCLOS right now isn't encouraging.

I can get a 20Gb flash 900 eee for a reasonable price, & the lack of a HDD is good for bouncing about at sea :-)

Cheers,

   Brent
