You don't need to worry about the DNS, the DNS should be automatically
assigned to you once you establish a connection.
It sounds like the modem is not dialing at all, most likely a driver
issue, but possibly incorrect configuration.
Please run the following command in the terminal and email back the
results:
sudo wvdialconf /tmp/wvdial.conf
That command is a utility for the wvdial program which is a text-based
modem dialer. It makes it easy for people on this list to see if your
modem is even discovered.
There's also another command we can run, to make sure the USB serial
adaptor is being detected.
Please unplug, wait 5 seconds, then plug in the serial adaptor again.
Then run the following command in the terminal:
sudo tail -n20 /var/log/syslog
And then email the output back. :-)
