A year or so ago I did exactly this, and got a DLink DI-624S which 
looked promising.

Then I discovered that it can only do FAT32 formatted external 
drives(!), and that the performance if writing or reading was abysmal. 
Too slow to play video over the LAN. Also it couldn't recognise my 
brother mfc-210.

'underwhelmed' is a nice way to put it
