Hi John,
It almost sounds like your problem is with the Skype registration process
and not with your Linux client.

I use Skype on my Ubuntu-Eee build without a problem - but my user account
was registered some time before, via a Windows box, so I didn't have that
set of hassles... Have you successfully registered a Skype username yet?
