Peter,

Given what you want to do, I would suggest Ubuntu or one of its 
siblings.  Easy to install, well behaved in terms of Skype and cameras, 
and easily obtainable?  And built on Debian so shares much of the 
claimed stability?  However, I don't want to get in a tennis match over 
the issue.  :-)    Just a thought, and within my capability, mostly.
