[wellylug] Critical Review of Karmic Koala

Another gem I 've just discovered from the world of Ubuntu is the usb
startup disk creator. I've been teling anyone who would listen that
this is wonderful. In a few minutes you can either be using any
computer perfectly safely as an Ubuntu computer and then return it to
its owner the way it was, or you can create and use a bootable usb to
spread Ubuntu across the world. Alas not now.
On Karmic it not only doesn't create the bootable usb you want but
makes the usb unmountable on a working system. It can be recovered but
you have to know how.
My worry is how this sort of thing can happen. This is not some
obscure conflict with unusual equipment or situations, it is a menu
item which has worked well in the past. Does no one go through the
menus and commands of Ubunutu releases and actually check they do
something?

Anyway, if you have Karmic and want to make a bootable usb be warned
that it appears to simply damage the usb drive. Conventional use of a
usb as storage is fine.
