Yes Mythbuntu works reasonably well.
However if you are interested in recording Sky or Freeview channels, going
the My Sky/Tivo route will save you a lot of time and hassle.
If all you want is standard TV, then this is a very useful page for NZ:

Setting up MythTV to play movies is a lot easier because you don't need to
mess around with TV decoding or XMLTV channel streams. The two potentially
tricky things are getting the remote control to work and getting output
going to the TV at the resolution you want.
One hard learned lesson: Treat the box like a VCR, once everything is
working don't run updates or attempt to make 'tweaks'. MythTV is fairly
robust, but the TV decoding and remote control stuff can be temperamental.
