Freeview can be received easily enough, both terrestial and via
satelite. HD is a bit more of an issue, but people have it working.

While they are tricky, there is a lot of knowledge out there, and many
howtos, some of them are actually useful as well. There is a relatively
large and active MythTV community within New Zealand. Most of us hang
out on the mythtvnz mailing list.

Yes, it quickly becomes critical infrastructure within the house.
Downtime tends to not be tolerated, especially by other members of the
house. Upgrades are to be approached with extreme caution. Yes, I am
speaking from experience here.
