[wellylug] Newbie here! WiFi issue and new computer

People,

    My name is Lucas and I've recently arrived in Wellington (well, not so recently). At home, in Argentina, I've been using Ubuntu Linux and now here I'm wanting to buy a laptop computer, but I want to make sure I'm going to get the best possible compatibility and particularly that I will be able to get to the internet through WiFi. I've been trying to get on WiFi from the hostel where I am by rebooting a friend's laptop with my Ubuntu live CD, but I can't get the internet connection working. Is there any important thing I need to know before I buy the computer?  Can anybody  help me with connecting to WiFi internet?
    I understand there is going to be a meeting and I am very interesting in attending. Do I have to do anything in particular to get to the meeting?  Thank you all very much.
