>     My name is Lucas and I've recently arrived in Wellington (well, not so recently). At home, in Argentina, I've been using Ubuntu Linux and now here I'm wanting to buy a laptop computer, but I want to make sure I'm going to get the best possible compatibility and particularly that I will be able to get to the internet through WiFi. I've been trying to get on WiFi from the hostel where I am by rebooting a friend's laptop with my Ubuntu live CD, but I can't get the internet connection working. Is there any important thing I need to know before I buy the computer?  Can anybody  help me with connecting to WiFi internet?

Intel chips are excellent with linux and I know they work with ubuntu
(8.04 on at least)

look for something with one of the following

Intel® WiMAX/WiFi Link 5350
Intel® WiMAX/WiFi Link 5150
Intel® WiFi Link 5300
Intel® WiFi Link 5100
Intel® Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN
Intel® PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection
Intel® PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection
Intel® PRO/Wireless 2915ABG Network Connection
Intel® PRO/Wireless 2100 Network Connection

I use 4965 and 3945 personally, and know they work very well.

Thinkpad laptops have almost perfect linux compatability (and use
intel wireless), I strongly reccomend them

The choice is up to you
