hi all,
Software Freedom Day Wellington is tomorrow (Sunday 20th September),
this email is just summarising some of the events taking place and what
will be available as well as important info for attendees and install
team.
WHEN TO COME
If you want to take part in other events during the day, I recommend you
arrive between 8:30 & 9:30am, since there is an "intro to the SFD" talk
at 9:30am.
If you are bringing your computer along to get an install done, it's
best if you arrive any time after 9:30am. If you arrive before then it's
ok, but we might still be getting the networks up and running etc.
The installfest is in Lion Harper Lounge 2, there will be a map
provided, from the reg desk go across the sky bridge, past the coffee
machine, past the hackfest/OLPC people and around the curved room till
you come to the area with tables and geeks with Linux PCs ;-)
WHEN TO GO
The installfest finishes at 4:30pm, there is then a wrap up for the
whole conf, including prize draw.
Afterwards there is a networking session at Mac's Brewery that anyone is
welcome to attend.
STUFF TO BRING (ATTENDEES)
Please bring your computer (inc screen, keyboard, mouse, and power
cables if required).
It is also appreciated if you bring along your ethernet cable, since we
don't have many spares.
Cafenet wifi tokens will be provided to attendees, we expect to also
have a 24-port switch with a laptop doing ethernet-to-wifi bridging (as
well as proxy to increase update performance).
LINUX-RELEVANT EVENTS AT SFD
There is a *lot* of stuff going on at SFD:
http://www.softwarefreedomday.org.nz/Schedule
In particular, the following is on at the installfest:
11:00am - 11:30am Introduction to Linux (by Jethro Carr)
My talk is aimed at people who have heard of Linux but who aren't really
familiar with what it is all about or the specifics.
11:30am - 12:00 Linux & OSS at Amberdms (by Jethro Carr)
I will also be doing a lightning talk sometime between 11:30 - 12:00
about the use of Linux & OSS to run at my startup (www.amberdms.com)
which may be of interest to some. This will be in a different
area of the SFD venue though, not in the same area as the installs.
2:00pm - 3:00pm Getting up to speed with Silverstripe (by Will Rossiter & Simon Welsh)
SilverStripe is a open source website content management system and
development framework. It embraces a flexible, modern system
architecture enabling users to implement powerful websites and
web-applications quickly.
This session will cover how to setup SilverStripe on your computer,
getting started with modules and provide a chance for you to ask
questions and talk with experienced SilverStripe developers.
PRIZES
There are some pretty cool prizes, including ones specially for
secondary/tertiary students:
