The open source drivers don't yet utilise all of the higher end 3d
acceleration capabilities of these cards, but they tend to be more
stable and reliable with suspend to ram and also 2D acceleration is as
good as or better then the proporietary catalyst drivers.  It is
expected that these open source driver projects will either merge at
some point or one will win out over the other, and they will eventually
compete performance wise with the proprietary driver.   

FYI, there are 2 different projects with different approaches to
handling of register settings for modsetting.  It is reasonably expected
that either these projects will merge, or on will clearly win out over
the other.  But I digress....
