Hi Jeff,
Getting a Vodem to work shouldn't be too complicated. I have the
2Degrees USB 3G dongle on my Fedora laptop, and that works fine :)
I don't know if the current Vodems have a mini-SD memory slot in them,
like the 2Degrees devices so, but if they do you should install the
"usb_modeswitch" package in Ubuntu.
It also usually requires manually configuring the Vodafone 3G details,
since the software for the Vodem is Windows-based.
A Google search should be able to provide these details, they're
usually on local sites like Geekzone.
I've used Gramps myself before, sadly not enough, but it's a nice
application. Good to show to as many people as possible IMO.
