I use a Vodafone Vodem with Ubuntu 10.10 whenever I'm on the road. As
far as I recall, it pretty much worked out of the box, with Ubuntu.
There are a number of different vodem versions out there, so your
mileage may vary. Mine is an "HSDPA USB Stick" model K3565-Z, from ZTE
Corporation. It has a micro-SD card in it as described by Dagan, but I
didn't have to add modeswitch - I think Ubuntu took care of that for me.
I had no success previously using Suse 11. But when I installed Ubuntu,
it recognised the modem, and was available for use. I can't remember how
much of the connection options I had to put in manually, but just in
case, what you need in the Mobile Broadband connection dialog is simply
the Number "*99#", and the APN "internet". All other settings are
default ones I think.
