Unfortunately the last few revisions of the Linux kernel have had some problems
with laptop battery life since a number of power regression issues have managed
to creep in (See Phoronix for details: http://tinyurl.com/6aoc337).
Undervolting helps to offset this of course.
That notwithstanding, I agree with others that you're probably best avoiding
vanilla Ubuntu. An LXDE based distro such as Mint LXDE or an Openbox based
distro such as Crunchbang (my pick) are good minimalist choices that still
include all the add-ons/codecs you'd want. Puppy excels on old or low spec
hardware but by default runs as root user (I do keep a copy on my USB key). All
of these distros fly on my Atom netbook, so you should have no problems.
Lastly, although I can't vouch for it myself, you may also like to consider
wattOS since distrowatch describes it as "a fast desktop Linux distribution
(that) strives to be as energy-efficient as possible so that it can be used on
low-specification and recycled computers."
