Yes. And I had hours of trouble before I noticed the SIM was in backwards.  
OK now.

Amongst harmless udev twiddling, I did install a new kernel, which could
conceivably have been necessary.  But I don't think so -- if Huawei support
really was broken, you would expect a launchpad bug with a thousand 
me-toos.

My one (network-manager-gnome with an xfce desktop) doesn't show icons
at all, but it does have a menu item.
