Not a firewall issue I think - I can retrieve
ftp://ftp.nz.debian.org/debian/dists/sid/Release with a browser, and it
has a clear header:

Valid-Until: Fri, 19 Jul 2013 14:53:32 UTC

So I think it's the mirror that has issues. I had the same with
wheezy-updates; I don't know what other parts of the repo might be out
of date.
