[wellylug] DSE XH8287 Access Point - how to change settings?

Hi Andrew,

Your question aroused my curiosity in networking.

A few humble suggestions follow.

1.) I wonder if your computer's routes give you
    access to the xh8287's IP address.

    My vague understanding is that the command
    line utility named "route", with no options,
    can show what your routing info is.

        $ route

    However,

        a.) I seem to recall that linux routing
            tools were recently renamed, and

        b.) at least for me, correctly
            interpreting route's output requires
            care.

2.) Maybe a command line utility named "nmap"
    could tell you if the xh8287 even has a working IP
    address.

    However, some people are sensitive to having
    their network scanned, and I believe it is
    generally considered polite to not do it
    without permission.

    However, if you administer the private net
    192.168.0.0, then maybe it's OK.

    You could try

        $ nmap -v -sP 192.168.0.0/24 | less

    and

        $ nmap -v -sP 192.168.1.0/24 | less

3.) If either nmap command reports a working IP
address that you think might be the xh8287, then I
suppose you could try pointing your web browser at
it, and seeing if you get a login screen. ( I bet
you know this.)

4.) If a login screen appears in your web browser,
maybe you could try the default user name and
passwords at

    http://www.router-defaults.com/Router/Linksys--WAP54G-ip-password-username

    http://apttech.wordpress.com/2010/01/15/linksys-wap54g-default-ip-username-and-password/

    in addition to

        admin 	password

    and

        blank   admin

I hope that helps,
Kingsley
