Thanks Grant and Kingsley,

The router is a different device, which is working fine --- just thought 
I'd make it clear. It is just an ADSL router/modem with a single 
ethernet port and no wireless.

arp and route just show the router.  This is the case whether I connect 
wired or wirelessly through the AP.

nmap on 192.168.1.0/24, .1/24 and .2/24 show nothing. 192.168.254.0/24 
shows the computer and the router.

I've tried nmap with the router switched off, just in case the AP has 
192.168.254.254 too, but it doesn't show up then either.

Surely it must have an IP address, no? I would have thought it would 
need one to act as a router, but even if it doesn't, controlling these 
things through a self-hosted webpage is so standard...
