If my understanding is correct that the XH8287
passes normal traffic, it might be interesting to
run something like the command line utility
"traceroute" to see if it reveals an IP address
between your computer and ADSL router.

I'm thinking of something like

    $ traceroute morse.kiwi.nz

I'm wondering if your computer's routes allow
traffic between it and subnets that the XH8287
could be on.

For example, if the "route" command says
everything, including the subnet that the XH8287 is
on, is routed through the ADSL router, I think that
might explain why nmap and your web browser do not
see it.

If you feel comfortable disclosing it...
what does

    $ route

say?

I suppose yet another possibility would be to log
into the ADSL router, and see if it's aware of the
XH8287, and ideally can tell you its IP address.

I hope that helps,
Kingsley
