Brent,

I really don't think it's fair to judge Debian based on your experiences
with Knoppix. Yes, Knoppix is based on Debian, but it'd be like saying
Redhat is bad because you don't like Mandrake - It doesn't make a lot of
sense.

You mentioned that the cdrom device was /dev/scd0 - knoppix most likely
enables the ide-scsi driver by default to allow recording cds using ide
writers. If this is the case, then the cdrom will be accessible as
/dev/scd0. Many distributions now are doing it nowadays.

As for your other problems, I can't really comment as I haven't used
Knoppix since sometime in 2002. In any case, it's unfair to state that
Debian's installer is "buggy and unfriendly" just because you had some
issues getting Knoppix working.

Imho, Debian has one of the most simple and straightforward installers
available.

Cheers,

Sam

An interesting day, setting up Knoppix on DSE laptops to run the
presentation.

Sadly, it more than confirmed my views on Debian as a novice distro.
Buggy &
unfriendly install compared to most others I've tried, but got it
running the presentation eventually.=20
