Gidday,
An Installfest 2005 report...
Background:
I suggested we get around to holding a 2005 installfest (before 2006 rolls
around) on the org list a few days ago. After some feedback on the org list &
some discussion between people at the LUG meeting tonight, 'tis timely to let
everyone on the main list know where we are at with this & ask for
help/support/ideas. So...
To summarise (& let me know if I've got anything wrong!!)
The concensus on the org list was that we should hold one, & it should be
bigger & better than the last ones!
If we are to capitalise on Software Freedom Day (10 Sept) to publicise the
'fest, it will need to be a following Saturday. Sept 17th is election day, not
really ideal, so it will be Saturday Sept 24th.
Jamie B. has volunteered to organise the glossy brochure, an advertising
presentation, organise the presentations on the day & publicity.
(Great stuff!!!)
Brent will build a LiveCD with the advertising presentation and arrange for it
to be run at DSE stores (much as per last year, only use a LiveCD insead of an
actual install).
Brent will see what sponsorship we can get again from Dymocks (OS books), DSE
and also try Novell.
We have some people for Mandriva & SuSE installs, as well as Knoppix &
PCLinuxOS LiveCD's. Chris Harris muttered something about Debian & volunteer,
but I suggest the WellyLUG Debian camp needs to sort out which Debian variant
will be used (Ubuntu/Kubuntu/???)
We will be giving presentations, much as we did last year, so we need
presenters with Linux topics to do 20 min to half hour presentations or
demonstrations.
Note that the target audience is likely to be pretty uninformed about Linux &
OS generally, so topics like how to compile new kernels are not appropriate :-)
Contact Jamie B. if you have any suggestions, or are willing to demo or present
something.
Brent has arranged things with Silicon as a venue, but Jamie has suggested we
use IBM Wgtn facilities, and suggested he should follow up that possibility.
I prefer we stick with Silicon...
1. as agreed last year it is more central to the greater Wgtn region
2. we will have the use of the kitchen this time, so tea/coffee etc can be
provided :-)
4. they will provide a system to run the advertising presentation at Dymocks
(assuming Dymocks are interested again)
3. we do have past & ongoing support from Silicon, and I believe we have some
sort of moral obligation to support those who have supported us.
So:
any comments/preferences on venue? (ie: Should we change from Silicon?)
any volunteers to help install,
organise,
pass out promotional brochures,
make tea/coffee or generally help on the day?
Cheers,
Brent
