But it seems if we are going to avoid netiquette wars we need a standard to 
quote and point new (and current) users at.

Personally I use such a variety of forums that I don't find any great 
problem with whatever style people want to use, but have a great problem 
with people who assert their style/preference is the standard and everyone 
else should conform - if the group wants a standard then they'd better 
state it (at the very least it would short circuit these off-topic 
arguments), even if that is just a pointer to some "netiquette" elsewhere.

As for people being expected to join the group and pick up the groups 
standards by osmosis, I think that's asking too much (hasn't worked for me ;-)
