Michael,
You might look into LSI (or maybe even Promise?) PCI RAID controllers.
AFAIK, the LSI ones are also sold as Intel.
http://www.lsilogic.com/files/docs/techdocs/storage_stand_prod/RAIDpage/mr_ide_linux_ug.pdf#search='PCI%20RAID%20Linux%20IDE%20SCSI%20LSI%20MegaRAID'
I've known both to work OK on a few Linux servers, and both are plentiful in
32bit PCI solutions. Not as high end as 3ware, but should be able to at least
support large drives, RAID, Linux & PCI32.
Adaptec also had some similar ones which were supposedly Linux compatible, but
I haven't used any. Given driver issues, I'd go with Promise as a last resort
:-)
