[wlug_org] Software Freedom Day- Call for participation.

Kia Ora All,

Apologies for the long post, Interface.org.nz has been involved in
creating an Event for software freedom day. We are concentrating on The
University Campus only tho (in official capacity). We however are going
to be getting a lot of materials and some members of Wellylug expressed
interest in doing somthing in the CBD and helping out. This is your
opportunity to help and participate. And share your resources and
Ideas. 



====The Plan for SFD 2005====

We are getting from the nice people at Canonical:

-300 CD's (I think Ubuntu)
-300 Baloons (Helium Quality)
-300 Stickers

Currently my Plan involves requisitioning a Helium tank to fill the

a) requires coordination of a helium tank to be obtained. Someone said
they had an account with BOC and could do it for us. Please come

b)That some money is allocated for the hirage of said inert gas.
Donations are appreciated towards this cause. Estimation of around 200$
c)That we have a Baloon filling session (Involving pizza)

part b of the plan involves CD's.

a) We need to update the IopenCD we produced (Chris you have some times
to fiddle with the menu again, since we could be doing this on a regular
basis perhaps some automation is in order.
b)Once an updated image is produced we need to get Media. 
c) Do a burning and Label/Slip making session (Combine with Baloon
filling and Pizza)

a)Determine who wants to do something on the day
b)Delegate people to areas, we need someone At Government House/Pipitea,
Probably 2-4 people in kelburn (various areas), 1 Architecture, and 1
Teachers College. Going on numbers who raised hands at the agm we should
have ample.
c) "My Favourite Part" Ties CD's to Helium Balloons to create a floating
Prophaganda blimp!!! (I am open to names for the complete device). This
would Contain a Copy of Our OpenCD, a Copy of the Ubuntu CD's, and a
Prophagandi Pamphlet (This needs to be created... Any Volunteers).

This will need to get parked in the Corridor outside my office (200-300
balloons with strings attached is a large number) I will talk with
facilities etc. 

I am a little worried about how long helium ballons last 

Reason for da Pig (beta title,,, related to suggestion of spit roast
ages ago) is that people can't resist Helium Baloons!!! Take a Baloon
You take the Propaganda... QED

We also need to Co-ordinate with Members of the WellyLug who are willing
to participate and get them to come along and take some of 'da Pigs' to
distribute. I have one Person confirmed from NZOSS. So anyone involved
with the lug please forward this on to members.


I am open to any other suggestions. But this is were I am heading, I
just need a band to join in and we might make this a nice little
singalong.



====Some Dates=====
Software Freedom day is the 10th, Those observant among you will realise
that this is a Saturday... Thus For campus Activity and for the Majority
of those who said they would help out, we will actually be holding
software freedom day on the 9th on campus (being a Friday and all)

I suggest that that Wednesday (7th) we do the Pig Stuffing etc. So start
letting people know that the 7th is the day you need to come along to
the Weekly interface meeting!

For those of you not aware you can order Pizza(not free) for the event
from the interface.org.nz wiki page (just follow the previous orders
format)

Please bring friends and acquaintances to that Wednesday evening who
might want to help out do stuff on the Saturday event. Normally we start
at 1800. (that's 6pm).

Again we need donations for Helium, so a few extra dollars for interface
fund for the night if you have not already arranged to chip in by then
would be good.

On the 10th (Saturday) (actual SFD) we want to do some activity in Town
(I suggest Corner Cuba and Manners). This is not however related to
interface, and so is primarily for those who want to do stuff then
anyway, again coordinating with wellylug members on this would be good.



====Helium Tank====
Someone on #wellylug has a Boc gas account, from calculations and
discussion I think we want an "E" type tank. We need to get this
arranged ASAP. 

We need to decide if any interface funds will be allocated towards this.
Ultimately however the funding needs to come from members pockets. 

We need to collect monies for this ASAP. You can provide them to any of
the following people. Donald Gordon, Joel Pauling, Alex Potanin, Chris
Andreae. Although Alex is probably the best person to get them to.
Generally these people may be found on the Second floor of the cotton
building during weekdays.

If everyone chips in $10 from the 10 people who said they wanted to help
out we are halfway there. Again, this is were Wellylug members interest
and NZOSS interest is helpful. 

If we do not meet the target for a Full E size costing, then we can go
for a smaller tank however it means that we don't get all 300 ballons
filled and airborne... it's okay no biggie. 

At this point I REALLY REALLY need the person who mentioned they dealt
with Boc regularly to ring me ASAP. My contact details are at the bottom
of this e-mail. If you know who that person is, please give me there
details so I can get in contact with them.

Because we need to either get the tank delivered or arrange for someone
with a car to pick it up.

I am fully open to suggestions/improvements at this point. But the
time-frame is closing quickly. Anyone who thinks some they can arrange a
Seminar like Talk thing organised in time that would also be cool.

Re anyone who thinks there company, boss, ex, flatmates dog may be of
assistance please get in touch with me.

For those who raised your hands to participate can you please get in
contact with me ASAP also. 

I suggest that anyone who is interested in any aspect of SFD in
Wellington attend this weeks Interface Meeting,
both Interface members and those from outside organisations.

NZOSS people, The first Wednesday of the month meeting unfortunately
does not happen till the Wednesday Next. May I be prudent and suggest
that in liu of the traditional BNZ lunch that we combine it with the
Interface Evening meeting? I realise this may not be practical for some
people. Please let me know if this is a good idea or should be shot now.
