FWIW, as I've said I'd have rather that Michael hadn't posted the
message that he did. And one of the significant reasons for that is
that then we'd have avoided this whole drawn out discussion entirely :-)
I, too, think that the volume of discussion about the "problem" has
significantly exceeded the problem of the marginally inappropriate post.
(Indeed if no one else had said anything I was simply going to pretend
that I hadn't seen the post.)
One of the reasons for requesting "no advertising" (and defining
"advertising" fairly broadly) was that I'd hoped that it would be a
clear "bright line" rule that would be relatively easily understood, and
that we could avoid endless "well that's allowed, so why isn't this, how
is this worse than that" discussions. Alas, it appears that this is not
the case.
Some people have said to me (offlist) that I should simply ask someone
else to run the mailing list (as I did a while ago with the website
after some issues there) and side step the whole problem. I don't plan
to do that. I'm still happy to host the mailing list on the same
basis as before (with, essentially, just this one condition under
discussion). But I'm also quite happy to help Wellylug transition the
list somewhere else if the group considers that appropriate. Or y'all
can do that without me if you prefer; I've already explained how moving
the mailing list can be done entirely without my participation.
So as I suggested before possibly the "poll" to put to the Wellylug
membership is whether the main and "trade" mailing list should be
combined or not. With the caveat that if they are combined then another
mailing list host will be required.
